Women's suffrage
During the time that Eleanor was around, women didn't have certain rights such as the right to vote, or the right to an education. Women also had an extremely hard time finding jobs because men had very low expectations for women and they didn't believe that women or young girls deserved to go to school, so most of them didn't have the proper education to fulfill the job requirements.
During this time women seemed more like the "accessories" to men and society than actual people.
The female gender were treated so poorly that if a man and a woman were in a relationship together, lived in a home that belonged to the woman's father and then got in a divorce, the man would be allowed to take the house, the children, and any money that was given to the woman by her parents.
Women were treated as the lesser gender and unequal to men, or the "superior" gender as they called it.
The Great Depression
During this time people were also in a "Great Depression." Not only women, but men could not find jobs. Because of this families saved everything. They saved used cans to grow plants in, old paper bags, and they often never bought new cloths.
So families could get even the tiniest bit of money, they forced their children into child labor. Children often sold fruits, vegetables, or newspapers out on the streets until it was night time. Children really didn't even make that much because other people weren't able to make money either so they couldn't buy from them.
World War 2
Around the time all of these other things were happening, men, and sometimes even women, were being shipped off to go fight in World War 2. Many people died and many women were left alone to care for their children. This caused great chaos and sadness everywhere.
